Jeff Levy

Biography

Jeff’s interest in finance started behind the cash register of his parent’s Kensington Market grocery store when he was 11. Raised in a wholesome family on the value of hard work and discipline, Jeff was always encouraged to pursue higher education and a professional career.

His focus and perseverance earned him an MBA, which quickly turned to adversity when a monumental event around the time of graduation created tough economic times globally, and limited the job opportunities in finance. Not wanting to waste an opportunity, Jeff used the situation as a catalyst to consider postgraduate study and expand his career options. Initially he thought this might be medical school, but his aversion to blood quickly ruled that out, and having already taken the LSATs, law school seemed more fitting.

After graduating from Osgoode in 2007 he articled for a small personal injury firm and quickly began to figure out what he didn’t want to do, before settling on what he did. With nothing more than a small office space and an eagerness to get to work, Jeff started his own law practice immediately after being called to the bar. He began taking on any work he could get, quickly outgrowing that small office in less than a year. Fatefully, a timely reunion with a colleague spurned a strategic partnership and even bigger office (this time half a floor) not even a year later that would be the home of their new firm, Levy Zavet.

Jeff started out his practice by utilizing his MBA & CFA background in real estate, property, and business law cases, which he continues to focus on and build upon today. Over his 12 years of practice, Jeff has become a subject matter expert in many of these facets of law including the field of mortgage investment entities such as MICs, private mortgage lending, syndicated mortgages, full-scale property and real estate transactions, and elaborate corporate transactions.

Never one to turn down a challenge, Jeff often works with large-scale condo developers to accomplish complex transactions from land assembly and property acquisition to individual final sales. His interest in business has led him to assist in elaborate corporate transactions and commercial finance that cover aspects such as succession planning, acquisitions, joint ventures, securities law, cannabis regulations, and cryptocurrency. As a business owner himself Jeff’s experience and interest in law also extends to working with businesses & healthcare practitioners to establish corporations, provide contracts and employment agreements, and protect their intellectual property rights through trademarks, copyrights, and licensing agreements. His unique skills and experience has also led Jeff to specialize in the field of mortgage enforcement, power of sales, and mortgage loan agreements

Always open to new learning opportunities, Jeff’s diverse scope of practice and successful business have been built by creating trusting relationships with clients who challenged him early on to learn new things, giving him the experience and confidence to handle increasingly complex transactions. After 12 years in business Jeff truly enjoys the client relations aspect of practicing law, and developing valuable long-term relationships that afford clients the opportunity to turn a small idea into something more fruitful.

Incredibly, things have come full circle now as he takes on the privilege of teaching a course in syndicated mortgages at Osgoode law school in 2021. When not working, Jeff still remains active in the Kensington Market neighbourhood as a small business owner, having converted his father’s grocery store into a legal dispensary called The Kensary. He enjoys taking his daughters there every weekend to tell them about growing up in the neighbourhood so they can understand the context of gratitude and hard work, and how happy he is to have retired from that grocery store.
